National Rifle Association of India ropes in Jaspal Rana finally

Jaspal was not included in the original list of coaches and it was only after Mail Today highlighted this, did the NRAI have a change of heart. It’s obvious as the parent body for shooting as a sport in the country, the NRAI owes a lot to its president Raninder Singh. He has been a national level marksman himself and always backed talent.Initially, Jaspal was not chosen for the camp as coach, despite having groomed shooters like Manu Bhaker, Saurabh Chaudhary, Anish Bhanwala and a few more. One is not sure who finalised the list of 13 shooters and a support staff of 11 for the national camp.”I was shocked my name was left out and there was no communication sent to me. Whatever I got to know was through the shooters. Having groomed these youngsters and nurtured them, I feel i can still contribute to them and the country as India hopes to clinch quota places for the Tokyo Olympics,” Jaspal told Mail Today.Within the NRAI, there seem to be wheels within wheels. That is the only explanation one can give for leaving out Jaspal from the coaches list. The Mail Today story was highlighted in social media and responses to his exclusion drew sharp comments from people within the shooting fraternity and otherwise.advertisementIt did no credit to the PR agency of the NRAI which first tried to deny the Mail Today story on Thursday and said “it’s factually wrong.” Matters did not end there. The PR person went on to say Jaspal “is only a junior coach.”When reminded that Jaspal had travelled with the young shooters to the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, ISSF World Cups, Asian championship and so on in 2018, matters became more clear for the NRAI.By afternoon, NRAI president Raninder Singh decided to step in and resolve the issue. In a series of tweets, Raninder, facing flak from many, complimented Jaspal and reiterated there is no junior or senior classification. It’s clear within the NRAI, there are some who dislike Jaspal. The champion shooter turned coach has always believed in calling a spade a spade. Jaspal’s telephone conversation with the NRAI president helped in resolving matters. It could well have been avoided had people with decision making rights in the NRAI been prudent in the first place. In Raninder’s view, the camps is still at an early stage and Jaspal can join in from Friday and help the shooters. An impression has been created Anish does not want to work with Jaspal. Be that as it may, Jaspal has never said “no” to working in tandem with the foreign coaches hired by the NRAI in collaboration with the government.Get real-time alerts and all the news on your phone with the all-new India Today app. Download from Post your comment Do You Like This Story?
