Asus Transformer Prime to get Ice Cream Sandwich in January

first_imgThe Eee Pad Transformer Prime may have the most ridiculous name this side of Droid Xyboard, but Asus’ device has quickly become the best tablet Android has to offer. Not only will it be the first device to run Nvidia’s quad-core Tegra 3 processor, but it also may be the first significant tablet to run Ice Cream Sandwich.Asus suggested that the tablet might be running the latest version of Android by late January. The news came on Asus’s Italian Facebook page; after apologizing for delaying the device’s launch, it said that it might ship with Ice Cream Sandwich around the end of January. You’ll want to keep in mind that this isn’t exactly an official announcement from Asus, and there was no direct mention of the US. But logic dictates that if the Italian Transformer Prime is launching with Ice Cream Sandwich at a certain time, the update will be available in the states at that point, if not earlier. While the bulk of 2011 saw a slew of overpriced Android tablets that tried (in vain) to beat the iPad at its own game, the last couple of months have shown us an improved approach to Android slates. The Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet offer mediocre performance, but they wisely choose to outdo the competition on price, not on specs. The Transformer Prime, meanwhile, takes everything that was great about its predecessor (quality hardware, keyboard dock) and gives its performance a shot of adrenaline. The US release date of the Prime has been scattershot — though fortunately less so than the Galaxy Nexus. It was previously thought to be December 12, but now it’s looking to ship the week of December 19 (next Monday).via Facebook (Asus Italia), Business Insiderlast_img read more
