Apple may unveil video and news services March 25 but no AirPods

first_img Comments Now playing: Watch this: 11 Apple’s streaming service could take on Netflix Apple The video service is expected to launch by the summer, according to a report by Bloomberg Wednesday, citing unnamed people familiar with the plan. Stars working with Apple on original programming — including Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner and J.J. Abrams — are invited to the March event. The unveiling of the news subscription service was expected to headline the presentation at the company’s Apple Park campus, in the Steve Jobs Theater, according to a Tuesday report by BuzzFeed News. But it added that two other highly anticipated announcements — next-generation AirPods and a new iPad Mini — would be no-shows.  Apple declined to comment Tuesday on the details of BuzzFeed’s report. Apple’s news subscription service was in the news earlier this week for the aggressive terms it’s reportedly putting to news publishers. A report from The Wall Street Journal citing sources said Apple is asking publishers to agree to such terms as letting the tech giant keep half the service’s revenue.  The news and video service would join the company’s Apple Music monthly subscription service for all-you-can-eat tunes on demand. Apple also operates in digital media through iTunes and its App Store. First published Feb. 12 at 2:06 p.m. PT. Update Feb. 13 at 4:25 p.m. PT: Adds report about video service plans. Apple: See what’s up with the tech giant. RCB vs MI stats preview Bumrah vs Kohli and big threat for

first_imgMumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, two sides who have not enjoyed the best starts to this season, need to get their acts together in their second match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. There are injury concerns in the Mumbai Indians camp which they need to address, while RCB need to be smart in picking a side which takes the field. If Jasprit Bumrah is fit and raring to go, his battle with his Indian captain will be where the match is potentially decided. The promos have already talked about this contest and now we take a look at the numbers. Back when he was making his IPL debut, Bumrah dismissed Kohli in his very first over. However, he has not be able to get the better of Kohli after that particular match. Kohli vs Bumrah – Who wins the contest? Jasprit BumrahNOAH SEELAM/AFP/Getty ImagesKohli has faced 66 balls from Jasprit Bumrah in the IPL and has peeled off 99 runs at a strike rate of 150 and this is where the match could be decided in Bangalore this evening.Another interesting matchup would between AB de Villiers and Krunal Pandya. His record against Mumbai Indians is impressive – he has scored 511 runs at an average of 39 and with a strike rate of 138.48.However, he needs to be wary of Krunal Pandya, who has got his number in the last four innings. Krunal enjoys playing against RCB and could be the possible game breaker in the contest. In the six matches before this, Krunal has picked up nine wickets at an average of 16.56 and with an economy rate of 6.21.The record of Hardik Pandya, however, is not very good against RCB or at the M Chinnaswamy stadium. He has struggled with the ball in hand against the Royal Challengers Bangalore and is the most expensive among the bowlers with 250+ balls bowled for Mumbai in IPL. His economy of 10.13 is the second worst in IPL. Krunal PandyaINDRANIL MUKHERJEE/AFP/Getty ImagesUnlike Krunal, he has managed to pick up only 4 wickets in the 7 matches he has played against RCB and also has the highest economy rate at the venue. “The execution is always key no matter what plans you have. We have the best death bowler. Bumrah is the best in the world. With a guy like that, it’s okay to be off the mark in one game knowing he’s going to come back strong. He’s not one of the best for no reason. Even the others, Mitch and Hardik, I know they are going to bounce back,” Mumbai wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock said before the match.last_img read more

Why dieting may not help you to lose weight

first_imgLooking to shed those extra kilos through dieting? You may be at a loss, as human bodies tend to compensate by sparing energy, limiting the number of calories that we burn and hence affect our weight loss regimen, researchers say. According to the study, a group of neurons – ‘agouti-related neuropeptide’ (AGRP) – in a brain region hypothalamus contributes to the caloric thermostat that regulates our weight, regulating how many calories we burn. When activated, these neurons make us hungry and drive us to eat, but when there is no food available, they tend to compensate for the reduction in calories. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”Our findings suggest that AGRP in the brain coordinate appetite and energy expenditure, and can turn a switch on and off to burn or spare calories depending on what’s available in the environment,” said Clemence Blouet from the University of Cambridge in Britain. “When we eat less, our body compensates and burns fewer calories, which makes losing weight harder,” Blouet added. However, as soon as food becomes available and we start eating, the action of the AGRP neurons is interrupted and our energy expenditure goes back up again to normal levels. In the study, published in the journal eLife, the researchers identified a new mechanism through which the body adapts to low caloric intake and limits weight loss in mice. Using a genetic trick to switch the AGRP neurons ‘on’ and ‘off,’ they rapidly and reversibly manipulated the neurons’ activity in mice, a finding that could help in the design of improved therapies to help reduce overeating and obesity.last_img read more

Kids ostracised Kashmiri doctor mulls leaving Kolkata

first_imgKolkata: The Kashmiri doctor, who claimed he was asked to leave Kolkata following the Pulwama attack, is considering bidding adieu to the city after his daughters complained of ostracism in school and neighbourhood. The doctor, a cardiologist who has been living here for the last 22 years, has claimed that a day after the terror attack, he was threatened of “dire consequences” if he continued to stay in the city with his family. The Pulwama terror strike in Jammu and Kashmir on February 14 claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel and injured several others. Also Read – Bose & Gandhi: More similar than apart, says Sugata Bose In spite of the threats, the doctor said on Monday that he would stay put after the West Bengal government came to his rescue. The doctor’s daughters, aged nine and seven, are students of one of the leading English-medium schools in the city. Ananya Chakraborti, Chairperson of the West Bengal State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, who had been coordinating with the family and assured all support to them, said both the girls have been ostracised by their friends in school. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: Mamata “The doctor told me that his daughters’ friends are not interacting with them properly. I told him not to get tensed. I spoke to the school authorities and they said they will look into it,” Chakraborti told PTI. Some kids who go to school with the doctor’s daughters, all of a sudden, have stopped travelling with them, she said. The doctor also told me that some children even stopped talking to his daughters, Chakraborti said. “We have assured all support. But this is an alarming situation which is being deliberately created ahead of the elections, with the sole aim of polarisation,” she said. The doctor, who did not wish to be named, could not be contacted as he is not willing to speak to the media. He had said on Monday that he was heckled but he did not pay much attention to the threats he received initially. However, his concern grew when some men gathered outside his residence and threatened to harm his daughters, unless he “returned to Pakistan”. According to the doctor, on February 15, a day after the Pulwama attack, five men aged between 20 and 25 years had come to his house after he returned home from his chamber, asking him to leave the city immediately and “go back to Pakistan as Kashmiris have no place in this country”.last_img read more

5 Questions to Ask Before Developing a Mobile App

first_img 3 min read This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience. This story originally appeared on Bizness Apps June 17, 2015 Major corporations and small businesses are recognizing the need to have a mobile app. Both are incorporating these apps into their business strategies, making their companies (no matter how big or small) more accessible to their customers. And if you’re considering starting a mobile app for your business, there has never been a better time. Here are five things you should ask yourself before you get started:1. Do I Outsource?Developing an app in house involves having much more control and direction over a project. It provides you with the opportunity to voice your input and have a more hands-on approach, all of which are extremely helpful to a marketer. The downside is that it can be time consuming, and occasionally, more expensive. Usually in-house mobile development teams are more expensive than outsourced equivalents.Businesses that choose to outsource instead lose that hands-on input, but can save money, and save themselves the time and stress of developing an app. If you’re willing to relinquish some control, this might be the way to go.2. Which Device Should I Develop For?Over 60% of Americans currently own smart phones, and global tablet ownership will reach 905 million by 2017. Consumers are completely it comes to their devices; from phones to tablets, deciding which platform to use (Apple, Android, etc.) can be a tricky decision for your business. It all depends on your business and your users. Which platform do they typically use? Check out the data. If the majority of shoppers relevant to your business access goods from an Android site, you should focus on Android. Recent data shows, however, that Apple users are more likely to spend more than Android users. Tablet use also boasts more revenue than smart phones, so that’s something else to consider.3. What Should My App Do?There are several approaches you can take, but you should strive to provide a fun yet helpful app with good features and better information. It all depends on your business, the user and what you want to offer them. You could even consider creating more than one app for various features, if your business is large enough to support such a venture, but there’s nothing wrong with keeping it simple.4. Can My Business Handle the Traffic?Developing an app will draw in a ton of new users and customers, and you need to be prepared for the new business. Make sure to update websites and programs accordingly, you don’t want to appear out of the loop with an impressive new app but older sites and systems. And don’t forget the customer service/satisfaction, new apps and programs are worthless without the positive reputation to back them up.5. How Do I Go About Design?Once you’ve got the other details ironed out, you can focus on design. Decisions must be made regarding things like aesthetics, functionality, visibility, and more. Design is a super-important part of developing an app. If your app doesn’t look good, doesn’t have a good “vibe”, or worse, isn’t readable or easily navigated, it is dead in the water. The average smart phone users download around 25 apps, and you need to make sure yours stands out! The app must be elegant, streamlined, easy to use and highly functional, users won’t accept anything less.
