Best gifts for gamers going back to school

first_img Sony PlayStation 4 Aug 29 • Save up to $500 on Microsoft Surface laptops and tablets 5:18 For students who are looking forward to Borderlands 3 more than hitting the books imminently, you can send them off with some great gaming gear to cushion the blow. (Only to use in their spare time, of course!) At a loss as to what will thrill them? Here are some suggestions to get you started, no matter how little — or how much — you want to spend.  Read: Best gaming chairs we’ve sat in for 2019  Note that CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of any products featured on our site. The waterproof K561 uses Outemu Blue switches that are tactile, clicky and loud — hopefully the new roommate won’t care about that.  Read Xbox Adapter Controller preview $319 James Martin/CNET We took Oculus Quest on vacation $239 at Amazon Sarah Tew/CNET $73 at Amazon Tags $287 at Amazon Oculus Amazon Asus Dell HP Lenovo Logitech Microsoft Razer Sony Nintendo Read Lenovo Legion Y740 review When you’re in that demon-killing mood, you should be able to frag with the best of them. Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements are on sale for $60 each Lenovo Legion Y740 Sarah Tew/CNET Yes, both the PS4 and Xbox are senior citizens in game console terms. But that also means they’re mature platforms with giant game libraries. The PS4 Slim delivers the base PlayStation experience in a compact wedge-shaped console that can connect to any HDTV. Get this over the Xbox for exclusives like Spider-Man, God of War, the Uncharted series, The Last of Us, Bloodborne and Horizon Zero Dawn. (You could also opt for the 4K-capable PS4 Pro, but it’s arguably overkill for the dorm — especially for TVs under 55 inches.) James Martin/CNET Mobile Edge makes gaming backpacks for Alienware and Razer, but the $104 Core bag is all its own. It can hold up to 17.3-inch laptops (though superthick ones are snug), has extra padding on the straps and back keep things as comfortable as possible, and there are places for all your gaming accessories and external cables for phone or tablet charging as well as room for the day-to-day schlep-arounds. There are currently three versions of the Xbox One right now, but the One S is the best one to get if you’re campus-bound. Xbox’s current lineup of exclusives is generally not as impressive as the PS4’s, but the key for this console (if you have a broadband connection) is to sign up for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. It’s effectively a “Netflix for games” that gives you a steady stream of new and classic titles to play at any given time. We’d recommend skipping the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, which is identical except that it doesn’t have a Blu-ray drive. It’s not much cheaper, and the ability to play used or borrowed disc-based games (and movies) still comes in handy. The Xbox One X is the most muscular console currently on the market, but — again — its 4K gaming features are probably overkill for basic campus gaming. For snatching moments between classes or on lunch break, get a portable console: the Nintendo Switch. But if they’re willing to take an IOU, you may want to wait until closer to the end of September to give them a Switch Lite, which will be lighter on your wallet at $200 and lighter in their backpacks, too. The catch is they won’t be able to connect to a bigger screen to play or swap out the controllers. If you do go for the original, make sure it’s the new model with extended battery life. Texas AM Extremely Concerned About White Nationalist Richard Spencer On Campus Plans

first_img“Yes, it is of extreme concern to those of us who are on the campus as well as to Aggies everywhere that this person who spews poison, basically, about races and about other religions is on our campus”, says Senior Vice President Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for Texas A&M University,  Amy Smith.Smith talks about the leader of the so-called Alt-Right movement, Richard Spencer, who is scheduled to participate in a privately-organized event at the Texas A&M campus on Tuesday the 6th.Spencer, who leads a white nationalist movement that has proclaimed itself close to president-elect Donald Trump, has also made clear his views on what he believes to be the supremacism of the white race and the need to find a way to expel immigrants out of the country, among other ideas.Texas A&M , however, did not invite him, Smith stresses. But the university also does not want to censor Spencer because of his First Amendment rights, according to a conversation between the university’s president, Michael K. Young, and the Texas Tribune. “We looked at a variety of different options for this”, Smith explains. “We are a state-supported school and they have free speech as do we, so we are using Aggies United which is Tuesday night at 6 pm and open to the public.”Smith refers to a counter event that the university has organized as a response to Spencer’s presence on campus: “Aggies United is an opportunity for us to come together as a campus and we have it open as well to the surrounding community to tell our story of who we are as a united front, as an active unity committed to the success of each other.” Spencer’s event was “through no invitation from us”, says the VP. “We are a public university, as you know, and we have private rooms that are available… and the administration was made aware that this person quietly booked the room, which I think is their m.o. that they are doing throughout the nation, where you have someone who would quietly book a room and then invite the speaker and that is indeed what happened.”Hence, the idea of Aggies United: “We were planning on a big end the semester party which we annually have and kind of a holiday party before students head off, and we pulled our money instead to support the students who wanted to pull together an event for each other that would talk about the things and the core values that they stand for that are in direct opposition to the speaker that is coming on campus”, Smith says.
